Edward Lehman Selected Leading China Corporate Commercial Lawyer 2013
“Lawyer Monthly” magazine has selected Edward Lehman, of Lehman Lee & Xu,
China, as the winner of its 2013 Individual Legal Award: “Leading China
Corporate Commercial Lawyer 2013″. The “Lawyer Monthly” annual awards
recognize the achievements of law firms and individuals who have engaged and
responded most successfully to the demands placed on them by recent global
recession and economic turmoil. As a “Lawyer Monthly” legal award winner
for “Leading China Corporate Commercial Lawyer 2013″, Mr. Lehman has
consistently stood out from his peers by demonstrating professional
achievement and excellence in China and as a corporate commercial legal
professional.
Edward Lehman is “an old China hand” with a long history in the People’s
Republic. He served as a Fellow at the China Academy of Social Sciences
(“CASS”), a government managed think tank which contributes to helping to
draft China laws, policies and regulations which CASS eventually propose
drafts of laws or act as a professional resource to the Chinese National
People’s Congress. Mr Lehman is the legal commentator to China Central
Television (“CCTV”) China’s State-run television media provider. Upon
graduation from law school in the United States, Mr Lehman was an associate
with the prestigious Chicago firm of Lord, Bissell, & Brook (now LockeLord).
The firm relocated Mr. Lehman from Chicago to China in 1987 where he
established the American firm’s office there.
On June 4, 1989, during the uprising in Tiananmen Square, Lehman was the
only foreigner to refuse American Embassy sponsored evacuation from the
mainland. When Lord, Bissell & Brook made the decision to pull out of China
for insurance reasons, Lehman joined a Chinese government run law office,
and remained in China. In 1992, after the Chinese government permitted
private law firms, Lehman and three other Chinese legal professionals
founded Lehman, Lee & Xu, the eighth foreign law firm established in
Mainland China. Mr. Lehman now holds the distinction of being the longest
serving Managing Director of any law firm in the People’s Republic of China
for the past 21+ consecutive years.
Over the past more than two decades, Lehman Lee & Xu has established itself
as the premier law firm in the region. From a single office, Lehman, Lee &
Xu has expanded to include affiliated operations serving most of China’s
major urban areas, but Macau, Hong Kong, and Mongolia as well.
Lehman, Lee & Xu represents many of the world’s most successful
multinational corporations, financial institutions, nongovernmental
organizations, and government agencies in a wide range of their operations.
LLX’s fields of expertise include: foreign direct investment, taxes,
corporate commercial, finance, patents, trademark law and mining law. In
addition, as part of a pro bono program, Lehman Lee & Xu has provided
representation to criminal defendants.
Taken together, all these factors made Edward Lehman a strong candidate for
this year’s award. “I’m honored to be selected and included in this fine
group of professionals”, Lehman commented. “It has been a great 26 years
here in China, and I’m looking forward to the next twenty six.”
