Iran, China, Russia, France, Germany, and the UK attended a meeting of the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna on May 25. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said that the meeting would discuss the impact of the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and the implementation of the JCPOA by the remaining signatories.
What is your expectation for the meeting? Is there any possibility for a new deal without US participation? If yes, what will be the major points? If not, what are the reasons?
Prospects for the meeting are uncertain, however, Iran appears willing to reach some kind of new deal with Europe, Russia and China, even without USA. Iran has issued the above demands for European compliance, which are basically the minimum steps which will need to be taken to maintain Iran’s connection with the outside world economically assuming Trump administration really does bring the harshest sanctions in history.
We may expect to hear promises from Europe regarding minimum oil purchases, and potentially measures to ensure Iranian access to European banks.
